Staying on caravan sites is a popular way to spend a summer holiday for many
British families. There is none of the hassle associated with a foreign holiday;
no need to exchange currency, arrange passports or spend hours making your way
through airport security.
There is no landing at your destination at some obscure time in the early
morning, exhausted and bad tempered, only to spend your first day catching up on
sleep. There is no mad panic to find the correct bus to take you to your
destination, no anticipation on the journey of a cockroach-infested dwelling;
you know what to expect with caravan sites. You simply bundle into the car,
endure a couple of hours of ‘Are we nearly there yet?’ whining and then arrive
at your destination.
Since the credit crunch hit and the collective consciousness has evolved
towards cutting down on luxury and saving money, it has become much more
fashionable than it was in days gone by to holiday within Britain.
This is all very well, after all, we have some truly splendid locations
within our island; diverse landscapes and scenery, some excellent cities and
occasionally, we get a really good hot summer.
The weather has always been the main off-putter for those considering caravan
sites for their summer holidays. If you really can’t bear the idea of being
hemmed into your caravan for a whole week should it rain, then look for caravan
parks that are based somewhere with entertainment that doesn’t rely on the
weather within easy reach.
This is, of course, much easier if you are on an adult-only holiday. Adults,
thankfully, can make their own entertainment when holidaying at caravan sites
most of the time and don’t need constant stimulation in the way that children
do. Caravan sites near cities with plenty of interest, such as Edinburgh,
Manchester, Liverpool or Cardiff will allow you to pass at least a couple of
rainy days by exploring the sights, eating out and sampling some local pubs.
If staying put at the park come rain or shine is your thing, choose a caravan
site with plenty of its own entertainment. Children can spend day after day
playing in an indoor pool and making new friends, and club houses often put on
family entertainment that children can get involved in while you relax with a
drink.
Be sure to take along lots of good old-fashioned entertainment too. Children
will want to bring their games consoles along, but this can be
counter-productive for everyone else who can’t even watch TV whilst the console
is in use. Board games, cards and even dominos all require participant
interaction, meaning you get to spend quality time having fun as a family.
