Maintaining your caravan awning is essential if you want it to last above a couple of years. This is even more relevant if you have an older awning or if you plan on buying a used model. The reason is that the materials used are not as advanced as some of the modern technology, and this makes them far less durable and strong. The most common problems you may encounter are leaking fabrics and worn support poles and attachments. This is to be expected over a period of time as the weather has a corrosive effect on metals, and the wind can damage the canvas and fabric.

Washing down the canvas after your trips can extend its life as it helps to prevent the build up of mildew. Be sure to allow the awning to dry in the sun before packing it away. This can sometimes be difficult of it is raining whilst you are taking things down on site. In this case it is better to wait until you get home and then bring the awning back out and leave it for a warmer day to dry. The quicker you can do this the better.

The latest fabrics employ a whole range of advanced materials that can be mildew proof, water proof and stain resistant. This does away with any maintenance on your part, and makes everything so much easier. It does come at a price though, and you can expect to pay much more than for a standard awning. The good thing is that more and more manufacturers are offering this technology as standard, and the costs will come down fairly rapidly.

The support poles can also be made from anti corrosive metals and special coatings. For many years steel was the main component of poles, as it was strong and added weight to the entire awning structure. The drawback was that it degraded after constant use and exposure to weather. Nowadays, alloy and fibreglass are available, and these are not only resistant to weather, they are much lighter and flexible. This allows them to bend in windy conditions and prevents them from breaking as easily.

Buying a modern caravan awning makes a lot of sense. You can use it every week without worrying about it degrading. Only minor maintenance is required, and if you follow the recommendations you should enjoy care free holidays for many years to come.
