Old Mac Daddy Luxury TRAILER HOTEL
ByOLD MAC DADDY LUXURY TRAILER HOTEL
Well known for their creative spin on hotel experiences; the Daddy Long Legs Group have brought an entirely new fusion of creativity and design to the slopes of rural Elgin, just outside Cape Town. Old Mac Daddy opened on 15 July 2010.
Old Mac Daddy turns the notion of the camping holiday inside out by adding comfort, glamour, edgy design, easy living and a good sense of humour to the picturesque rural spot. As with their previous city-based Airstream Penthouse Trailer Park (on the roof of the Grand Daddy Hotel), the team behind Old Mac Daddy called upon the talents of local artists, decorators, architects and stylists to dream up the themed interiors of the collectable vintage Airstreams.

What is different about this rural incarnation is that they have incorporated the Airstreams into uber-contemporary living units with bathrooms and lounge-cum-children’s rooms. Old Mac Daddy also boasts a slick communal dining and bar area, Euro-feel kids play area and plenty of room for functions and business pow-wows.
The Elgin area also offers a wide variety of activities, from river rafting to mountain biking, with team building adventure packages available on request. Boasting exceptional landscapes, Elgin is home to the Cape Epic and it also boasts the fantastic Lebanon Mountain Bike Trail.
Says owner, Jody Aufrichtig, “When you come to the country, you generally come for more than one or two nights. We realised that these trailers would need enough space and privacy for people to enjoy over a number of days and nights so we added on the living spaces and it really has created a fantastic experience. The communal barn, swimming pool, farm dam, vineyards, orchards and gardens are also all designed to maximise the outdoor experience. You can be with people or you can slip into your hide-away, depending on your mood.
Beyond the novel experience of staying in a room themed like the interior of a submarine (Yellow Submarine), the inside of a Henri Rousseau painting (The Dream), a traditional Karoo home (For Better or Boerewors) or a botanist’s laboratory (Private Life of Plants) – Old Mac Daddy’s fresh take on modern design and interiors both contrasts with and celebrates it’s natural surrounds.
Throughout Old Mac Daddy’s progress, the Daddy Group has called on the public for their feelings and ideas. In a continuation of this approach, Old Mac Daddy is offering some exceptional opening rates through winter – and into summer (until 11 January 2011) in the hope that many of their followers will see the project through to its conclusion.
The R 875 (£75) per trailer per weekend night (weekends, public and school holidays) rate can only be beaten by an even more exceptional rate of R 475 (£42) per week night. The rates include a continental breakfast and are based on two adults sharing. The trailer suites can sleep an additional 2 children under age of sixteen – R175 (£15) per child including breakfast.
Though without a trailer and theme, the stylish and spaciously comfortable Daddy’s Villa sleeps six in three rooms and is also available at a very low opening rate of
R 1750.00 for the Villa – including breakfast for all six guests. Make time to wallow in the private outdoor bath beneath the stars.
Making time is, in fact, at the essence of Old Mac Daddy. Its vision is for guests to have an uncomplicated yet happily spoilt stay in a beautiful spot that offers peace, playfulness, surprises and soothing design elements. The end result is a slowing down of time to make more of the things that matter.
